The Department of Ardeche

Ardeche is a south central department of France known for its ethnic culture, picturesque landscapes and natural splendor.
The people here are fiercely loyal to the land and the mix of the local cultures with developing urbanization adds further beauty to the land.

Sharing its past is the ancient province of Vivarais,  it belongs to the administration of the Rhone Alps and has three districts, 33 cantons and 333 communes coming under its direct purview.

Some of the other important cities are Annonay, Bourg-Saint-Andeol, Davézieux, Privas, Aubenas, and Guilherand-Granges. Each of these boasts of unique cultural history and natural splendor.

It has seven natural regions. 

High Vivarais is the contrary to the name,  is not the highest point but the northern most point. Middle vivarais, located centrally, covers the Valley Eyrieux. It is known for its exquisite rivers, hills and pleateaus. The Boutieres is the heart of the department and connects the place with the erstwhile Rhone valley. The Basin Privas, known for Chestnuts is also the capital of the department and lies at an altitude between 200 and 600 meters. Coiron is a ridge basalt shaped division that partially divides the department in half. Its altitude is about 800m. Upper ardeche pleateau is known for its volcanic granitic soils and Cévennes Ardéchoise, located southeast of the Massif Central is known for its rich history. Lower vivarais is south of the city of Aubenas and Rhone Valley covers the river Rhone that lies at the eastern edge of the department.
